ECJ does not use diamonds only labeled “conflict free” as this label does not insure that diamonds are actually free of conflict. Currently, we are not satisfied with the sourcing practices around any newly mined diamonds. For this reason, we only use recycled/repurposed diamonds and lab grown diamonds. We are routinely analyzing newly mined diamond sources and are involved in conversations around improving diamond mining through organizations such as Chicago Responsible Jewelry Conference.
Source Origin: Reclaimed/Recycled

Cutting Origin: N/A. The reclaimed diamonds we buy are already cut and polished. If they are in need of recutting, that happens within the US.
ECJ Assessment: All of our reclaimed diamonds are from suppliers who claim their diamonds are not newly mined and are either pre consumer or post consumer recycled. However, they do not have systems in place to prove the status of pre or post consumer. Through our built relationships with our suppliers and our own due diligence, we feel confident in their word and revisit this conversation routinely.
Please note: According to the definition of “Recycled” a material is meant to be melted down and reformed into a useful state. This does not happen to diamonds; however, the name stuck. For this reason, we try to use the term reclaimed as it is more applicable.

ECJ Assessment: All of our lab grown diamonds are SCS Certified Sustainable. Our lab grown diamond supplier has been evaluated against five pillars (Origin Traceability, Ethical Stewardship, Climate Neutrality, Sustainable Production Practices and Sustainability Investments) of sustainability and is found to be in full conformance with the requirements of the SCS 007 Jewelry Sustainability Standard. Each lab grown diamond we sell comes with a Certificate of Sustainability, provided by SCS Global Services. You can learn more about the SCS 007 label here.
