The Latest on Lab-Grown Diamonds

There’s a lot being said about lab-grown diamonds right now, and a lot of it sounds the same. So, instead of repeating what everyone else is saying, I want to offer my take.

Lab-Grown Diamonds: An Alternative, Not a Solution

At Emily Chelsea Jewelry, we believe it’s important to make a clear distinction from the start: lab-grown diamonds, along with reclaimed and repurposed diamonds, are not a direct solution to the challenges posed by the traditional diamond mining industry. Instead, they are alternatives

Lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment using high-tech processes. While these diamonds are made in a lab, they still require a significant amount of energy to produce. Since the tech is relatively new, there’s still much to learn about the long-term environmental impact of mass production. However, lab-grown diamonds offer some significant benefits, especially for those who are committed to making ethical choices.

1. Where We Source Matters

When I decided to start working with lab-grown diamonds, I knew that sourcing would be everything. That’s why ECJ works exclusively with two certified labs that prioritize sustainability.

These labs offset their carbon output, rely on renewable energy, and are committed to reducing their emissions year over year. This ensures that every diamond we use is produced responsibly.

By supporting sustainable labs, ECJ can offer customers diamonds that align with our values. And, for our customers, they get the assurance of top-quality diamonds without sacrificing ethics.

2. Lab-Grown Diamonds Don’t Hold Value Like Natural Diamonds

It’s important to understand that lab-grown diamonds behave differently when it comes to value. Much like electronics or cars, lab-grown diamonds depreciate quickly. As technology improves, the cost to produce them decreases, meaning prices continue to fall over time.

Unlike natural diamonds, which tend to appreciate or hold value due to their rarity, lab-grown diamonds are not considered an investment. The quick depreciation doesn’t make them “better” or “worse” than natural diamonds, but it’s something to consider when making your decision.

3. More Affordable, More Accessible

One of the most exciting benefits of lab-grown diamonds is the significantly lower price point. Thanks to advances in production technology, these diamonds are much more affordable than natural diamonds, allowing you to purchase a larger stone or explore more intricate design choices that may not have been possible with a natural diamond.

For me, this means ECJ customers can get a beautiful diamond without having to compromise on size or design. This is a perfect choice for those looking for a meaningful piece at a more affordable price.

4. The Industry Is Still Evolving

The landscape of lab-grown diamonds is shifting as the market grows. A recent update from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) reflects these changes. Starting October 1, 2025, the GIA will no longer grade lab-grown diamonds on the same detailed scale as natural diamonds. Instead, they will be categorized as “Premium” or “Standard” diamonds.

This change is a significant reflection of where the market is headed, and how lab-grown diamonds are being understood. It shows that while the technology and acceptance of lab-grown diamonds are progressing, they are still treated differently within the industry. This broader classification is a good reminder that lab-grown diamonds are still evolving, and how the market adapts will shape future perceptions.

5. It’s About Making a Choice That Aligns with Your Values

Ultimately, it’s not about which diamond is “better” than the other. Lab-grown and natural diamonds each have their place and purpose, and it comes down to personal choice.

Here at Emily Chelsea Jewelry, we encourage you to make decisions that align with your priorities. Whether that’s sustainability, cost, or simply choosing a piece that speaks to your heart. Lab-grown diamonds are a fantastic choice for those looking for more sustainable and affordable options. But for others, the timeless value of natural diamonds still holds immense appeal.

Transparent Choices Matter

As we move toward a more ethical and sustainable future, the jewelry industry is shifting. Lab-grown diamonds are a part of that shift, offering a new way to embrace the brilliance of diamonds while being mindful of their environmental impact. The question isn’t so much “which diamond type is ‘better’” but rather which one best reflects your values

At Emily Chelsea Jewelry, we are committed to offering transparency in every piece we create. No matter which stone you choose, you can trust that it has been sourced with care, intention, and sustainability at the forefront.
